A wonderful cast iron cockerel doorstop, standing proud on a decorative oval base with a beautifully detailed cast finish — every feather, comb and wattle picked out in the mould. The original hand-painted colours have softened and worn back to the iron in places, leaving a lovely muted palette of dusky red, ochre and verdigris green.

Properly heavy, as a doorstop should be. Perfect propping open a kitchen or garden door, or simply standing sentry on a hearth, shelf or windowsill as a piece of farmhouse character.

CONDITION

Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. Paint loss and light surface rust throughout, exactly as you’d want on a piece like this — it’s what gives him his character.

The cockerel has been a doorway guardian for thousands of years. Because he crows at first light, ancient cultures believed he drove off the spirits of the night — which is why roosters ended up on church weathervanes across Europe, and why he became such a natural subject for something that literally stands at your threshold. A doorstop was a Victorian household object; this particular shape is a superstition much older than the iron it’s cast from.
